Are you ready to learn everything, but everything, about the appearance of a cannabis plant? Move on to the next paragraph now!
How is it done? How to make a marijuana plant? Here’s how to recognize one.
The cannabis plant has a tall, strong stem capable of supporting the weight of the many branches, leaves, and, of course, flowers or seeds depending on the plant’s gender. Many branches emerge from the stem, giving the plant different shapes depending on the strain it belongs to:
- cannabis indica has a Christmas tree-like structure (but don’t use it to hang Christmas decorations!)
- Sativa hemp plants have a shape similar to that of a candlestick;
- cannabis ruderalis is very small compared to sativa and indica and has few branches, which develop with a structure similar to that of sativa.
As you can imagine, cannabis indica has a much denser structure of leaves and branches than sativa and ruderalis.

Speaking of leaves, many fan-shaped leaves grow on the branches. But their appearance also depends on the strain of marijuana they belong to:
- Sativa has very thin 9-fingered leaves;
- indica leaves have 7 fingers that are much wider than sativa;
- ruderalis leaves are small and have only 5 fingers, with 2 being very small compared to the 3 central ones.
Now, with the help of images, you certainly have an idea of the morphology of the cannabis plant and will know how to recognize it even if you see it in a field among many other plants. But perhaps you want to satisfy an additional curiosity: how to recognize a male or female marijuana plant?
When and how to know if the marijuana plant is male or female.
The first step to recognize legal male/female cannabis, and thus differentiate female plants from male plants, is to wait for the cannabis to be recognized as legal. The plants develop. Marijuana seedlings begin to reveal their sex just a few weeks after germination. Let’s try to imagine that the vegetative period is childhood and that flowering is the phase in which marijuana is adult. The identification of the sex of the seedlings can begin between these periods, that is, during the transition from adolescence to the final growth phase.
The most obvious signs that characterize female and male plants appear after the sixth week of the plant’s life. These signals are the pistils (in the female marijuana plant) and the small pollen sacs (in the male marijuana).

Here’s how to recognize a female marijuana plant.
The main characteristic that helps us understand that a legal herbaceous plant is female is the appearance of white pistils after (approximately) the sixth week of life, although the emergence of pistils can often take longer. These small white “hairs” primarily grow between the main stem and the branches, in the part called the axil. The pistils are nothing more than flowers that begin to sprout and form. Being able to see the pistils is a great event for legal hemp producers and CBD oil producers, as only female plants can produce flowers rich in resin and, consequently, cannabinoids such as CBD.

Male cannabis plants, on the other hand, produce pollen sacs that then pollinate the flowers of female plants. The result is the development of cannabis seeds: some growers celebrate… Others cry because it means that the flowering has been compromised.
Wondering? How to recognize a male seed from a female? Unfortunately, this is not possible; for this reason, growers who want to produce light herb flowers buy feminized seeds. Feminized cannabis seeds are hormonally modified seeds, so they have a 99% chance of giving rise to a female plant. The chances of a male plant arising from a feminized seed are very minimal.

Recognizing a legal male hemp: a little tip to establish it before it pollinates female plants.
Identifying a light male hemp is very simple, as it starts to develop small “balls” immediately after the end of the vegetative period. These balls are actually pollen sacs that, once fully developed, can pollinate female plants in the full flowering phase.
As we anticipated, when a female marijuana plant is pollinated, it stops developing flowers and switches to seed production.
It is not surprising that many producers immediately eliminate male plants so they do not risk compromising the entire harvest.
In conclusion
You now know how to spot a legal (or illegal, as they look exactly the same) marijuana plant and how to distinguish female cannabis from male cannabis.
